Vasilisa Titov

Shrine Maiden, Rumour Witch and Assistant Editor of the School Newspaper

You are a stoic and resolute spiritual guardian of the Titov line, who wields the magics of profound emptiness and necessity against the horror chained beneath the grounds of the Titov Shrine and you are at just the right age that you are *never* going to forgive your parents for this.

It's not because when you were four years old your father Iskandar Titov chained you to the weathervane above the family Shrine for three nights during a Dust Storm and called upon Dread Powers of Indifference and Cold to take you as a price for the continuation of existence. (To be fair, he *did* spend the rest of the week comforting you after the Dread Powers proved utterly indifferent to the attempted sacrifice, *and* brought you your own set of dolls which is more than can be said for your sister Isabella.)

It's not because when you were nine years old your mother Nirmala abandoned you, breaking herself upon the earth to call forth Diána and rescue Ezther. That hurt, but in the circumstances it was the best she could have done. Probably.

It's not even the fact that you are expected to devote your life to warding against (or possibly worshipping) a sacred horror that would unmake all that is real if it could. (You could, you suppose, always marry out of the family if you really hated it, but who wants to think about marriage at your age?)

It's because you are now 15 years old and your parents still insist on keeping you under a curfew! A curfew! This is an outrage! A scandal! An injustice!

So you joined an after-School club because it was about the only way you would get to spend any real time outside of the Family Shrine goofing off with your friends. Well you would goof off if you, you know, had all that many friends. So you joined the school newspaper, which was surprisingly short-staffed considering its wide circulation and the amount of leeway the Principal was prepared to give the club to let them run the gargantuan printing presses next to the Home Economics department.

Anyway you got your big break with your expose on how the Soylent Purple served in the lunch-room was being produced through forced labour of Nimblejacks. There was a clamour and an uproar and the Principal backed down and promised to pay the Nimblejacks so long as they only kidnapped ingredients who had been at least a third of the way towards deserving it! He put a Fair Trade sticker on the posters and everything!

After that Moritaka-senpai (the Editor) took a shine to you and made you Assistant-Editor. Power! Prestige! Recognition! Now you run errands for Moritaka-senpai, make the necessary sacrifices to keep the printing presses running. (It requires one murder a day to keep the wheels spinning and the paper flowing. It's why we can have newspapers and societies and civilisation, Moritaka-senpai says. Generally you use the magic of the Titov family to catch a mouse, or scoop up an earthworm or similar.)

And also, last term, when sales were lagging and you needed something to spice up the gossip column you went into the newspaper archives and used the most dire rituals of the Titov family to summon up an Ancient and Terrible Evil that ate most of the back-issues and the rumours board. You *think* you managed to get away with that one, I mean the archives had partially flooded anyway due to one of Lee Scathing's more ambitious experiments so everybody just assumed that was what did for all the old newspaper copies and you just told everyone that you found the shiny new wall of rumours on a rubbish tip.

But now whenever you find yourself on the trail of an exciting rumour you get the feeling that the new rumours board is *staring* at you, egging you on. You get the feeling it's going to take far more than one murder a day to solve that problem. Your parents are going to be *so* mad.

Academic Ability: Bright Pupil
Athletic Ability: Average
Blood Type: A+
Favorite Food: Miso Mackerel Ramen
Age: 15
Animal: Rat
Club: School Newspaper (Assistant Editor), Photography Club

Appearance: A slightly shorter than average raven-haired young woman with a tall black pointy hat and an intense stare that always makes her seem a little *too* interested in everything. If you had to assign a spirit-animal to her you’d probably go with some kind of rodent or scavenger bird, though you also get the feeling it would be a bad idea to actually tell her that.

Mortal Skills

Student 1 - You're no prodigy, but you do well enough when you apply yourself.
Rumour-monger 1 - You're out to find the truth! Or just make something up. Either way, as long as it works towards your goals.
Photographer 2 - If you hadn't been born a Titov, you'd probably be a photo-journalist. As it is you augment your talents by tainting the developing room with Outside Dust.
Titov Family Magic 2 - You are well-trained in the rituals and observances of the Titov family line.
Cool 2 - The shrine maidens of the Titov line are resolute in their duties, if a little creepy. Bad things still happen to you, but they don't seem to affect you as much as they would ordinary people.

  • Connection 1- Kun (He keeps *staring* at me! All I did was slice open a few earthworms with a sacrificial dagger and now he has a crush on me or something! Eww.)
  • Connection 3- The Titov Family (The family you were born with.)
  • Connection 2- The School Newspaper (The family you chose.)
  • Connection 1- The Photography Club (The family you goof off with.)
  • Connection 1- Kagami Vasili (She comes round to the family shrine to poke at clues sometimes, and doesn't run screaming when I catch her. That makes her my best friend, I guess?)

Relationships with the Titovs

  • Relationship with Iskandar: Papa’s favourite. A state of affairs so transparent as to be basically uncontested. You were to be a sacrifice, chained to the weathervane atop the shrine for three nights. A necessary cruelty to save us all. But the powers you were to be sacrificed to were indifferent, or maybe they simply did not exist. Perhaps it is because of guilt that Iskandar shows you some measure of affection that he denies to the others, or perhaps it is *because* the forces Iskander rails against seem to have no interest in you that he feels he can safely show you love.
  • Relationship with Nirmala: There was a time (when you were small) when mother knew you and, you believe, cared for you. No more. Her eyes see you not. Even in her more lucid moments, when she has loving words for Ezther or vicious hate for Isabella, or garbled prophecies for the others, she does not see you at all. This hurts. But you can’t find it in your heart to hate mother, so you bottle the venom and bitterness inside you and save it for Ezther.
  • Relationship with Jason Pyotr: Mutual contempt, but no real malice. The venom between you and Ezther means that he nominally dislikes you because he believes that can win her favour, but it also means he is not threatened by you and so feels no need to go out of the way to show you cruelty. You would ideally like to poison his heart against Ezther, and have opened the wound between them on more than one occasion, but you are mostly indifferent to him.
  • Relationship with Ezther: Once you had a mother. Now you do not. Ezther and her frail heart are the reason this is so, and so she is a lightning rod for the hurt you feel. The feeling is mutual, and the both of you enact schemes to hurt the other on a regular basis. When nothing else comes up, you constantly flaunt your status as father’s favourite over her, and endeavour to make her blind to the love mother is still capable of showing her. Even if you ran away from or married out of the Titov’s, and turned your back on the family magic, you suspect that you would continue to hate her and keep coming back to the shrine, just to flaunt the freedom and health and happiness you have that she lacks.
  • Relationship with Soramir: You pity your older brother and his doomed rivalry with Jason, and that pity drives him to resent you even as he is fiercely protective of the attention you show him. His hatred of Jason mirrors your hatred of Ezther, so when the twins are going through one of their unified periods Soramir generally finds common cause with you against them, and he is probably the most useful of your siblings in his way.
  • Relationship with Isabella: Your younger sister should probably hate you. You, who father showered with new clothes and toys while she got your and Ezther’s hand-me-downs. Certainly you are happy to remind her of this on those occasions you are moved to feel spite for her. So why does she *not* hate you as you hate Ezther? Probably just to unnerve you, and she is so *good* at that.
  • Relationship with Diána: Why would you have a strong opinion about the furniture? She’s nice enough, you guess, though the fact that she is Ezther’s tool at heart means the two of you are more often enemies than not. Still you can’t bring yourself to feel much antipathy towards her. She’s not *really* family after all, or even a real person.

  • Bond: I can perceive lies, and change how people perceive lies. (2)
  • Affliction: The rumours I spread become real! (2- Linked to Reality Syndrome)
  • 5 Connections (see above)

Miraculous Arcs and Powers

Reality Syndrome (2)

Experience: The story I am telling.
Hack: I can spread rumours that supplant the truth when enough people believe them.

  • Shared Experience: Vasilisa can share vivid and sometimes interactive images of the stories she tells, usually as Rashomon-style changeable flashbacks.
  • Dreams Made Flesh: Vasilisa can take some aspect of one of her rumours, make it real, and use it in a comparatively peaceful interaction with the world.
  • Childish Dreams/A little Push: Vasilisa can enhance mundane intentions so that they interact with details of her rumours. (E.g. if she spreads a rumour that the lunch-lady is actually an undercover arms dealer, she could use a mundane intention to purchase an AK47 along with her vegetable curry.)

XP And Quests

Free-Floating XP: 0

XP Emotion: Shake your fist at (And give an XP Token to) Vasilisa Titov
Really, you're a tabloid journalist. You wouldn't be doing your job properly if *someone* wasn't mad at you.

Basic Quest

You know what I heard…
XP: 2/9
Any-Time Struggle (Orange) Quest
Public face: Icy social manipulator. The truth is what I make it.
Private face: I wanted to know the truth right? What’s even true anymore?

You're trying to spread a rumor! You know what you're saying isn't true, or even if it is true, it's not something that ought to be spread… but you're doing it anyways. Maybe you're just trying to bring facts to light, or teach someone a lesson… whatever your reason, it's not as easy to lie as you pretend it is. When you’re saying or emoting this to everyone…

"I heard something about so-and-so…."

Some deeply- or shallowly-buried part of you is actually thinking this:

"I really shouldn't be saying this, should I?"

Create or pick out a two-sided sign: one side is your public face, the other shows your hidden thoughts. You can earn a bonus XP at any time (though only once per 15 minutes/scene) by expressing that emotion—normally, by holding up the sign. The back side of the sign reminds you of your flaws. If you’re not playing in a place where you can actually hold up the sign, it’s OK to just remind yourself quietly of what it says, or, if you must, ignore the back side in its entirety.

Reality Syndrome 1

XP: 0/60

First Quest:
The Object(page 658-660, Chuubo’s core- July version)
XP: 21/24
Text: Last term I snuck into the newspaper archives after School and performed one of the ancient and forbidden rituals of the Titov family, to summon up a force capable of spicing up the gossip column and restoring flagging sales. Now I have a shiny new Wall of Rumours that I feed information on the mysteries, scandals and celebrities of the School. As the board grows and devours more paper and information it begins to make *connections*. Multi-coloured ribbons appear, linked by notations scrawled on post-it notes or marker pen that nobody remembers writing. I think we’re onto something here…

XP Goals:

  • Someone uses one of your newspaper articles against you in some way.
  • The Newspaper serves as a crucial reference in resolving some conflict or solving some mystery.
  • You sort out your head on some issue and write a story about it in the School Newspaper.
  • The School Newspaper Contains an important secret, or people falsely believe it does.

Second Quest
A New Hobby (Peaceful version) (page 637-638, Chuubo’s core- July version)
XP: (2/ 15)
Text: Seeking a release valve from the intrigues of the School Newspaper I have joined the Photography Club, a circle of eccentric but peaceful mystics dedicated to realising some great work through their art. Hijinks will probably ensue.

Possible Future Quests:

Third Quest
Poisoned (See pp 667-669 of the Chuubo's core edited backer draft July version)
XP: 0/21
Text: The eldritch curse of lies and rumours that I released from the archives of the school newspaper has grown fat off of the diet of attention, gossip, speculation, blood, sweat and tears I have been feeding it. So much so that it has attained a measure of sentience and is now haunting me. By telling it stories I am giving it something of my nature. Will it devour me, or is it becoming part of me?

Mutable Stats

Will: 6/8
MP: 8/5

  • Complex 2- You're driven to distraction. Why does Kun have it out for me? Tian Kun is a weird kid and I'm pretty sure he has it out for me after he attacked me in the halls. He's always hanging around with all sorts of disgusting, slimy creatures. I've got to do something about him. Why can't anyone else see how dangerous he is?
  • Trust 1-You’ve shown or acquired a connection to some power outside yourself. Foreign as the concept is, it appears that other people do in fact have complicated thoughts and feelings of their own. I now have to apologise to Tian Kun and Kagami for trying to brutally murder them in my dreams.
  • Sickness 2- You’re having a hard time hanging on to who you are. I have been made privy to the contents of Lee Scathing's locker… and Kun found a way to bleach my brain clean. Too bad it's left me hollow inside.

Health Levels:
Tough:"My empathy is rotting away and I am becoming disconnected from my emotions." +1 Tool bonus
